Fun Fact Friday #22 - A Special Visit

The fact is…

it’s Friday and come Monday, there are only 38 school days left…

Yesterday, during 7^th period, Janet came up to the track with two women.  As she pulled closer, I realized that one of them was Judy Amiguet (yes, she was the teacher who transferred to Lonehill 29 years ago and made it possible for me to keep my job).  It was so great seeing her.  Knowing that she came back to visit during my last year.  She was amazed at all the new things here…she took a tour of the new gym, she saw the old gym which now has a wall and not a curtain separating the two areas, the new track, all the new lights, softball fields missing…

There are people in our lives who leave that indelible imprints…never forget yours…I know I won’t…

The other lady was Mrs. Barton…I coached her daughter Missy in volleyball…

Was cool to see them both…

Fun Fact Friday # 20 - Phantom Infield

This one is for you JOY…

 

When I coached JV softball at Chino High School back in the early 80’s, we came to Bonita to play a JV softball game.  There were these two coaches who will remain nameless… (but two great men who to this day I owe many thanks)…one of the coaches was the head varsity boy’s basketball coach for many years here and the other one became a great friend over the years…

 

Their team took the field after us for their pre-game warm up…thing is, they had no softballs!  We were laughing and wondering what this was all about…of course, that is exactly what Bonita wanted us to think…

 

It was “phantom infield”…we thought this was the craziest thing in the world…but in all fairness…I used it ever since then.  My teams loved it…No errors, no bad throws, no dropped balls, no mistakes…all this meant no negativity to start the game the only way we knew how.  Everything was positive and the girls would cheer each other on just as they would in the game.  It freaked the other teams out…we got to their mental game…most importantly, it created a bond that I think many athletes are lacking these days…Think about it…

So I was talking with my neighbor more yesterday and got more photos and information. 

 

For basketball – the original picture I sent you was Vern (who he shared with me went by Dewayne Gillett) the Basketball coach, John Wooden and the USC Coach (he thinks it was Sam Barry). The Head Basketball coach that year that won the Championship was Joe Deal.  Vern was also named the MVP that year – 1951!

 

I have attached some more photos…A baseball signed by Mickey Mantel, one by Yogi Beara, one by Satchel Paige, a photo of Ewell Blackwell and his Lettermen’s Sweater J

For most of you, only one quarter left of the 2017-2018 school year…

BUT FOR ME…58 school days left in my teaching career…

Vern Gillette, A 1951 Bonita graduate, is the gentleman on the far right.  This same year they won CIF for both Basketball and Baseball in which he was captain of both teams.

Do any of you know the coaches name…he played in the major league for the Yankees and a couple other teams.

Fun Fact Friday #17 - NOT a fun fact

BUT NEVER THE LESS…FACT

I posted this last night after talking with a friend who teaches in the Covina Valley School District. She is at one of the middle schools.

She says, “Oh sure, we have a plan ON PAPER but we have never practiced that plan!!!” 

We spend so much energy on things that don't matter. And one day it will be too late. I'm so proud of you Eric for putting our “paper plan” to action. Although it may not yet be perfect, at least IT has been practiced…and “practice makes perfect”...THANK YOU!  To all of you...talk to your students…talk to your kids…talk to your friends…THIS shooting stuff is real!!!  LISTEN to kids when they are upset…and know the signs…tell administrators if you suspect danger…words alone won’t save lives…we have to be active in the process!!!

IT IS NOW OVER BY THE ACCESS ROAD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE 800 CLASSROOMS.  NOT SURE IF IT STORES FOOTBALL GEAR NOW OR NOT, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS COOL THAT I HAD THE NEWSPAPER CLIPPING FROM THE DAILY BULLITEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS…

Fun Fact Friday #15 - Mile Run

This is from a parent who I admire his honesty and to the point responses more and more every day…this response is in regards to his son’s mile run.  The student failed last semester (due to mostly lack of effort and not making anything up) and now that the mile time has gone to 10, I was worried he will fail again.  So, in communicating with the parent, this is the response.  And, I am no longer worried…

 

I will title the entry there is no ENTITLEMENT in my family!!!  And it will need no explanation I am sure…

 

I was thinking about it and maybe we should just leave things the way they are. You don’t need to change your criteria to accommodate my lazy kid. HE needs to make the change and if he doesn’t then he gets another year of P.E. Life isn’t going to cater to his needs.  If he fails then he has to deal with the consequences at school and at home. What do you think?

The road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has announced it’s All-Star Series Women’s National USA Softball Team

There are two teams.  2018 World Championship and 2018 Japan All-Star Series.  One of our Bonita family members made the 2018 Japan team…

 

Congratulations to Courtney Gano – infielder. 

Courtney is a 2011 Bonita Graduate.  She was a 4 year varsity letterman and starting shortstop, All-league, league MVP, etc.  She went on to play college softball at University of Washington, where she graduated in 2017.
