Fun Fact Friday # 8 - Freedom Writers

HO HUM…what to write for today…
Well let’s see…

Erin Gruwell entered second grade at La Verne Heights Elementary School, attended Ramona Middle School and graduated from Bonita in 1987.  She began her teaching career in Room 203 at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach.  Many of her students lived with gang violence and drugs.  Using diaries and journals, Ms. Gruwell inspired her students to write their own stories and aspire to lives beyond their crime-ridden neighborhoods.  With Ms. Gruwell’s support, the “Freedom Writers” published a book, The Freedom Writers Diary-How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them.  In January of 2005 Paramount Pictures released a film based on Ms. Gruwell’s experiences teaching in Long Beach.  Freedom Writers stared Hilary Swank as Erin Gruwell.

I had the pleasure of coaching this young lady in JV Field Hockey during the 1983 season (my first year at Bonita).  She was a very motivated and aggressive player.  Even at a very young age, she was a leader on and off the field.  She never made excuses, but instead, worked even harder to improve.  She didn’t settle for anything but the best.  I hope one day I can run into her and say thanks for all she did for my coaching career and for the lives of many kids over the years.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND Y’ALL

Fun Fact Friday # 7 - Locker Rooms

The girl’s locker room used to be used by both boys and girls.  (The locker room currently being used by the boys was not built until the mid 60’s I believe).  The west side was the boy’s side.  The east side was the girl’s side.  There were doors that closed to separate boys and girls and each had one bathroom (3 stalls).  The male teachers used the office I am in.  The windows in their office on the east side were blackened out so they couldn’t see the girls.  The female teacher used the area just outside Pam’s office (which used to be all storage for uniforms and equipment) and she (Judy Amiguet) was also the locker room attendant.  Her office had a chain link gate that closed to secure her belongings.  The reason there are long sports lockers on the west side is that was the football team room as well.  I am guessing this is when the school population was very very low.  And remember, back in the day PE was required all 4 years…

Anyway…thought y’all would think that was interesting.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND…

Fun Fact Friday # 6 - Glenn Davis

GLENN DAVIS, the greatest Athlete in Bonita History…
I will remember these days forever.  And if you haven’t seen the display in the library, please go see it.
Heisman:  I was there when he walked in the office.  There were no local newspaper journalists or cameras…just our yearbook photographer.  I remember Mr. Davis handing the trophy to then ASB President Mark Rivera.  Chris Parkson and Dan Harden were in the office at the time along with the Principal Greg Franklin.
IT WAS 1997…So, 20 years ago…my how time flies…
