Fun Fact Friday # 5 - It's All About Me

IT’S MY LAST YEAR SO WHAT THE H E DOUBLE L!!!

TEACHING CAREER:  IT WAS DURING MY CREDENTIAL CLASSES THAT I WAS ASSIGNED BONITA AS MY SCHOOL TO DO MY STUDENT TEACHING.  JEAN BRENNECKE AND JUDY AMIGUET WERE MY MASTER TEACHERS WHEN I STUDENT TAUGHT HERE IN 1984.  IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE, I LEARNED A LOT AND I LOVED THIS SCHOOL.  THEY BOTH TOLD ME TO STICK AROUND, BECAUSE THEY WERE GETTING CLOSE TO RETIRING.  THE NEXT YEAR, I WAS THE LOCKER ROOM ATTENDANT.  I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE BONITA, BUT I WANTED TO BE A TEACHER…WHEN JEAN DECIDED TO GO OVER TO RAMONA TO BE A COUNSELOR, I WAS HIRED AS A PE TEACHER, WORKING WITH JUDY AMIGUET.  AFTER MY FIRST YEAR, (AND NO, I DID NOT STRIKE THAT YEAR) I WAS RIFFED.  BUT BECAUSE JUDY WENT TO LONE HILL TO BECOME A COUNSELOR, I WAS ABLE TO KEEP MY JOB.  I HAVE BEEN THE ONLY FULL TIME FEMALE PE TEACHER SINCE THE 1987-88 SCHOOL YEAR.

I HAVE WORKED WITH SEVERAL WONDERFUL PE (INCLUDING JEAN AND JUDY) AND DANCE TEACHERS THROUGH THE YEARS…THOM YOUNG, BRANDI (DE LANG) KNISS, GEORGE (KING OF THE HILL) KING, STAN “THE MAN” WHITLEY, CHRIS “LEGEND” PARKSON, JOHN KNOTT, KERILYNN (PUTINANO) DANGLES, JULIE BEER-KERR, JOSH KOEPFER, KELLY O’GRADY, SAM LOPEZ, DARREN BAUMUNK, MICHELLE OKAYAMA AND RYAN MARCOS…

WHEN I FIRST CAME TO BONITA THERE WAS NO GIRL’S SOCCER PROGRAM.  WE HAD 2 STAR PLAYERS MAKE AND START ON BOY’S JV TEAM.  DURING THEIR SOPHOMORE YEAR, WE STARTED A GIRL’S PROGRAM.  THAT WAS THE YEAR FIELD HOCKEY WAS MOVED TO A FALL SPORT.  I HELPED START THE FS BOY’S AND GIRL’S SOCCER PROGRAMS, GIRL’S WATER POLO AND GOLF.  WE HAD BADMINTON AND GYMNASTICS BACK IN THE DAY…

THE SPORTS I COACHED: STARTING IN 1983
JV AND VARSITY VOLLEYBALL
JV AND VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY (WHICH AT THE TIME WAS A WINTER SPORT)
FS (STARTED THE PROGRAM IN 1991), JV AND VARSITY SOFTBALL
JV TENNIS
I MADE A BOOKLET FOR EVERY ATHLETE EVERY SEASON I COACHED.  AND I HAVE EVERY ONE OF THEM IN MY OFFICE.  IF ANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM (THERE ARE A FEW OF JOY WHEN SHE WAS AN ATHLETE HERE LOL), FEEL FREE TO STOP BY.

AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR 27 YEARS, I WORKED WITH THOM YOUNG, MEL HAWKINS, BOB ESPINOZA, DAN HARDEN, ERIC PODLEY and DARREN BAUMUNK.

LOCKER ROOM ATTENDANTES I WORKED WITH:  KATHY TAYLOR, SHERYL BIZZELLE, DOTTIE MC GLAUGHLIN, MARIA RAMOS AND PAM TEDESCO (FOR THE PAST 22 YEARS).

THE PRINCIPALS I HAVE WORKED WITH INCLUDED LOU ROSEN (WHO HIRED ME THE FIRST TIME), BOB LEWIS (HE RE- HIRED ME) BRUCE CANTLEY, GREG FRANKLIN, BOB KETTERLING, DEREK BUB AND KENNY RITCHIE.

IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO LIST THE NUMBER OF BOY’S LOCKER ROOM ATTENDANTS (15 AT LEAST) AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS IN CHARGE OF ATHLETICS (MORE THAN 20 I WOULD SAY) I HAVE GONE THROUGH….SO WHEN YOU HEAR “BONITA IS A STEPPING STONE FOR ADMINISTRATORS” THEY WEREN’T KIDDING…

SO, YEA…THAT’S ME IN A NUT SHELL.
I BLEED GREEN AND WHITE AND WILL FOREVER HOLD THE BEARCAT ALMA MATER IN MY SOUL!!!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND Y’ALL…

Fun Fact Friday # 3 - Senior Pranks

Today’s topic is SENIOR PRANKS
I know these are frowned upon these days, and virtually outlawed, but I have seen my share of funny ones (and some not so funny ones).
In order from # 5 to # 1…here goes (and I can’t guarantee these are exact facts, but to the best of my knowledge, they are close)…
If you are a Bonita Alumni, then you may have actually been a part of one of these pranks.  Not sure if you will admit it, but that would be fun in itself…
And, although some are not necessarily funny, they are indeed the “facts”…
# 5  The juniors turned the sprinklers on the seniors during graduation practice (when the stadium was grass).  Our Booster Club President actually had the key and gave it to his son who was a junior…

# 4   The seniors put super glue in all of the locks on all of the doors…and the head custodian at the time had every lock cleaned up before the teachers arrived.

# 3   The seniors hoisted a Billy Goat on to the 700 building roof and tied it to a pole.  They even put water and hay up there.

# 2  The seniors lined the entire quad with plastic and filled it with water.

And the # 1  senior prank of my tenure was this.  Bart Bartholomew was our boys locker room attendant and Athletic Trainer.  He drove a white golf cart around campus.  The seniors hoisted his cart to the top of the 700 building roof using a pulley system.

Fun Fact Friday # 1 - Adjunct Duty

I thought it would be fun to start a “FUN FACT FRIDAY”
So many of you youngsters and newbies don’t know the history of Bonita High School…Since I go back to 1982, I am going to start.  I am hoping others will follow my lead.
Only 1 fact per Friday…cuz this is going to happen all year long…
MY FUN FACT FOR THIS WONDERFUL SEPTEMBER 1, 2017
Back when I started teaching at Bonita in 1986, teachers had “adjunct duty” which meant you were required to put in a certain number of hours each year.  It could be to supervise at plays, or games or dances, etc.  Off the access road by the cafeteria/teacher’s lounge (where the bins are located), there was an actual “smoking area” designated to the students.  (the teachers had one too but it was inside the building).  The student smoking area was fenced in and they entered through a gate as I recall.  I had to supervise.  Needless to say, that was the worst job I could have been assigned to.  The good thing was that because I was coaching three sports and GAA adviser, I only had 10 total hours of duty for the year.
So, that, my friends is my fun fact.  I hope you will participate, as I am sure there are lots of facts even us oldsters aren’t aware of…
I already have my fact for next Friday…J
