Fun Fact Friday # 8 - Freedom Writers

HO HUM…what to write for today…
Well let’s see…

Erin Gruwell entered second grade at La Verne Heights Elementary School, attended Ramona Middle School and graduated from Bonita in 1987.  She began her teaching career in Room 203 at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach.  Many of her students lived with gang violence and drugs.  Using diaries and journals, Ms. Gruwell inspired her students to write their own stories and aspire to lives beyond their crime-ridden neighborhoods.  With Ms. Gruwell’s support, the “Freedom Writers” published a book, The Freedom Writers Diary-How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them.  In January of 2005 Paramount Pictures released a film based on Ms. Gruwell’s experiences teaching in Long Beach.  Freedom Writers stared Hilary Swank as Erin Gruwell.

I had the pleasure of coaching this young lady in JV Field Hockey during the 1983 season (my first year at Bonita).  She was a very motivated and aggressive player.  Even at a very young age, she was a leader on and off the field.  She never made excuses, but instead, worked even harder to improve.  She didn’t settle for anything but the best.  I hope one day I can run into her and say thanks for all she did for my coaching career and for the lives of many kids over the years.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND Y’ALL
